First, it should have high specific strength and specific modulus.

Second, it should have excellent welding performance.
At present, the automatic argon arc welding method is mainly used in the ships. And the good weldability means that the welding cracks appear less in welding the aluminum profile, that is to say, the aluminum profile has a good welding crack resistance. The requirement of good welding crack resistance is because the shipbuilding conditions can not be processed with re-heat treatment to restore the loss of welding performance.
Third, it should have excellent corrosion resistance.
The ship structure is used in severe sea water and marine environments, so the corrosion resistance is one of the main signs of marine profiles.
Fourth, it should have a good cold-and-hot forming performance.
Because the ship manufactures include kinds of cold and hot process, the marine aluminum profile must be easy to shape without produce crack defects, and meet the strength and corrosion resistance requirements after processing.
The marine aluminum profile has strict type selection. The currently common types are 5083, 5086, 5454, 5754, 6061, etc.
